NanoWriMo is almost here! Eek! The first year I was a pantster with no planning. The second year, I was a plantster... some planning, but not really a whole outline or anything. This year, I took the plunge and have transformed into a full-on planner. I utilized OneNote and my plotting book NovelCraft to create an online outline. I plotted out my characters, locations, settings, etc. I feel more ready than I ever have, but the days leading up to Nano are always nervous ones... have I planned enough? Am I prepared enough? Do I have all my snacks, drinks, and things in hand? We'll see!  less

It's too hot to plot. #Melting #HelpMe Seriously though, I'm working on plotting for two separate standalone novels, which should be interesting. I plan on doing Risque 4 for NanoWriMo again in November. My sister is coming to visit for the 4th, so we're going to do a photoshoot for the series she's modeling for so I can get the cover for the first made. So much to do. So little time!

It's a bit simplistic, of course, but we've all heard that there are no "new" stories, just new ways of writing them. For me, I think the originality lies in the characters, their struggles, and the way they overcome them... whatever they may be. What are your thoughts? Do your stories fit in the categories? Are there any more categories you think might have been overlooked?

in the topic How do you promote? in the forum Marketing and Promoting Help
I've learned to never put all my eggs in one basket. I use AuthorsXP for newsletter promotions. I do author takeovers when friends of mine are having book release parties. I run giveaways. I post here, so that it'll be shared to LitSocial's social media accounts. I also offer free Ebooks to people willing to write a review, (though rate of return on that is low and can be tricky) and generally just do my best to help other authors as much as I can. The goal as a writer is to get people to remember your name. Branding is key. A logo that speaks to your work, that you use across all social media, the same usernames on all of them if you can. Friend and converse with other authors and readers as often as you can, and stay out of the indie author drama rumor mills. Make yourself visible, and that's most of the battle. People will remember you before they remember your books. in the topic Too many ideas? in the forum General Writing Discussions
I get too many as well. Little things inspire me everywhere, and I start thinking, which is apparently a bad habit of mine :) I find that I get the opening paragraph in my head right away, so I'll jot that down to start the scene, and then put down specifics and ideas behind it, that way I can remember whatever I was thinking of. My notepad in my phone is littered with half finished notes that I've jotted to myself while out and about, or just before I'm getting to sleep. :)

Italics and underlines- You can use one or the other but never both. They mean the same thing—underlining used to be a copy-editing mark to tell printers to set certain words in italic type. Underlining italics meant the editor wanted the words taken out of italics. So underlining your already- italicized phrase is, in effect, like using a double negative. #writing #writingtips

This is a fun little tool that I use on Facebook to be able to see my percentages as I work. It does NOT post to your profile any longer though, as it wasn't updated to work with Facebook's new app settings. To use, go here. It'll ask you permission, but specifies that it cannot post to your timeline. This is just the general Facebook permission setting, and is used for all apps. Once that is done, you'll be on the main screen, which looks like this. Clicking "Add New" allows you to set up your work in progress. Always add a target word count if you want to see the percentages. Change "Post to Wall" to "NO" in order to not get an error, now that Facebook's app guidelines have changed. If you forget it (I do sometimes) it'll take you to the error page, and you just have to click the Facebook link at the top to go back to your main Facebook feed, then click the app again to see the updated percentage. Otherwise, it'll refresh and show you your new percentage right away. This is what the window looks like once works have been added. If you want to show these off on your Facebook timeline or here, simply take a screenshot of that page to share, that's what I do! :)
